CHALLENGE
As one of the two most recognized sporting events in Boston every year, the Head of the Charles Regatta needed to take advantage of advancements in communications in order to improve the experience of competitors, volunteers, and spectators. The primary objectives were to:
Develop the brand identity of the event
Post as much information as possible to the site
Promote sponsors and supporters
Distribute race times to competitors and spectators
The solution would need to be simple enough to be supported by the Regatta's limited staff. It would also need to be easy to update as this would serve as the infrastructure for years to come.
SOLUTION
In partnership with Mechanica Branding, we delivered a site that accurately reflected the brand and the identity of the Regatta. By reflecting its rich history and worldwide stature, we were able to communicate the impact of the event to those who were not familiar with it.
To deliver race times to competitors and spectators, we set up a wireless delivery system to deliver show times via Short Message Service, commonly referred to as SMS or Text Message. We also set up a wirelessly accessible site for users who had web-enabled browsers.
RESULTS
Over the course of the weekend event, the wireless distribution technology created by Digital Bungalow sent over 2500 text messages to registered users.
Christopher Kerber, Assistant Director of the Head of the Charles Regatta, remarked that, "The ability to leverage SMS and WAP technology with Digital Bungalow's know how infused production value to our Live Results of racing. The boost allowed us to reach a greater audience both at the Charles River venue and coast to coast."
"There was a good buzz going from folks I spoke to. People remarked the turnaround was surprisingly quick," commented Kerber.
The success of this Digital Bungalow led initiative far surpassed the expectations of the Head of the Charles Regatta staff. The systems implemented resulted in an event more enjoyable for athletes, personnel and attendees. A distinguished Boston tradition became compatible with the technological demands of the 21st century. The HOCR case demonstrates the ability of Digital Bungalow to effectively innovate a brand without compromising its integrity.
